The centuries-old tradition of diving and sponge harvesting

One of the most interesting islands on the Croatian coast is the island of Krapanj, the lowest and the smallest inhabited Croatian island, located in the Šibenik water area. Krapanj is well known for harvesting and processing of the Adriatic sponge, as well as the centuries-old tradition of diving, which is why it is also called “the sponge island”.

The inhabitants of Krapanj started harvesting sponges at the end of the 17th century, when Friar Antun from Crete taught them how to harvest and clean them. Ever since, the people of Krapanj have been known as the only sponge harvesters on the eastern coast of the Adriatic. They are also the most skilled and the most physically enduring divers.
Visit Krapanj to learn more about this unusual craft and bring back a valuable and unusual gift from the Adriatic Sea!
